Introduction to the Termination Meeting
Termination is never easy, but it can be
made less burdensome with standard steps and procedures. It is essential
that employers develop a clear discipline and termination policy and
communicate that policy to employees, preferably upon their hiring.
There are numerous legal issues surrounding employee termination, and
employers need to make sure that they comply with all federal and state
employment and non-discrimination laws, as well as any employment
agreements or collective bargaining agreements (in the case of a union).
By consulting with experienced legal counsel to draft and implement a
termination policy, employers can reduce exposure to lawsuits and other
claims from terminated employees.
An important component of the
termination process is the termination meeting. This section contains
information on preparing for the meeting, conducting the meeting, and
following up with post-termination issues.
